T-Mobile’s New G-Phone – MyTouch

T-Mobile is slated to launch T-Mobile New G-Phone - MyTouch. While no hardware details have been released, rumors have it that this new phone dubbed G2 is essentially a rebadged HTC Magic. T-Mobile is even treating its existing customers right. They will be able to get the MyTouch on July 8 for $199. New customers will have to wait until August to sign up for their two-year contract.
Some of the key features for G2 include:
- Touch screen keyboard - The biggest change is the physical QWERTY keyboard. It’s gone, replaced by an-onscreen soft keyboard. The soft keyboard improves on Palm Pre, too, with predictive text (the Pre has neither prediction nor correction to help you use its tiny buttons), and it vibrates when you touch a button to let you know you’ve touched a button.
- Slimmer and lighter - The new phone is slimmer (early reports compare it to the iPhone) and lighter, at 4.1 ounces against 5.6 ounces (116g vs. 160g).
- Better battery life - A new 1340mAh battery should give a claimed six hours of talk time versus the five hours of the old 1150mAh battery.
- Microsoft Exchange Support - One major improvement the myTouch 3G brings over the G1 on the U.S. is official Microsoft Exchange support.
- Video Capabilities - The myTouch phone will also sport a 3.2-megapixel camera, video capabilities and a music player (due to Android 1.5)
- Colors - The new Phone will be available in multiple colors, unlike its predecessor.
Is this truly a game changer? Hardly! In my opinion T-Mobile is offering too little, too late. Unless you are a die-hard Android fan, consumers are better off with buying a Palm Pre or an iPhone 3Gs (you get more features for your buck, plus multi-touch). Or alternatively, wait until the Samsung Galaxy comes in the US.
